I ISLAND: EST 2012

Sound and Mixed Media Installation

Edinburgh. 2012

This work is an ongoing project centred around the idea of creating ones own island.

Whether that is our own identity or our own space, as we grow we create distance between entities, whilst sometimes grow closer to others.  The piece is meant to be meditative, allowing the viewer to contemplate both positives and negatives about this isolation and difference from one or another.

The installation had two plinths with large wells in each filled with a white liquid.  Through the liquid ska and reggae music played creating ripples across the surface whilst filing the room with island vibes.  There were no actual island within the liquid yet the ripples could be seen as fluctuating islands, or the liquid pools could also be seen as island within a solid form.  Yet the plinths themselves were isolated from each other as well.  The viewers in the room responded differently to what was presented as an island and to the poster and text that were attached to wall.

Your life is an island separated from all other islands and continents. Regardless of how
many boats you send to other shores or how many ships arrive upon your shores,
you yourself are an island separated by its own pains, secluded in its
happiness
